Appearance: Sawyer has sandy blond hair that is beginning to get a little long and ragged after his time on the island, and sharp blue eyes. He is handsome with a bad boy air about him and tends to walk with a cocky, confident swagger. His face usually wears a matching expression or a superior smirk but when something is truly upsetting him he has a very hard time keeping up this façade. He speaks with a lazy southern drawl that seems to fit his constant smirking perfectly. Physically he’s in quite good shape although he has picked up some recent scars, notably a knife wound on his right bicep and a gunshot wound on his left shoulder. When reading he dons a pair of glasses that have been created by welding two completely unmatched pairs of eyeglasses together, making him look admittedly ridiculous. For the most part he dresses in jeans and button down shirt, but knows how to dress up snappy when the occasion calls for it.
Personality: Sawyer is all slick, confident conman, and always seems able to think up cutting remarks, comebacks and clever nicknames. He can often be downright mean to others, and generally comes off as a jerk. In reality, he actually goes out of his way to make people hate him because of the guilt he feels over many of the things he has done in his life. He has a lot of emotional baggage and is bitter and driven to do what he feels he has to. Despite his scoundrel ways, he will never do anything that would hurt a child, even if it gets him in trouble. On the other hand, he can be funny and playful, and will usually do the right thing in the end. He’s surprisingly intelligent and well-read, and often makes unexpected references to books or classic novels. Besides reading he also enjoys playing games - everything from cards to ping-pong. Since his arrival on the island he has had a pretty dramatic personality arch; he still keeps up the bad guy attitude, but has proved over and over again he is willing to sacrifice himself to save others, even if he claims not to like or care about them. He is also surprisingly loyal and sticks by those around him. The jerk-like attitude is not exactly an act, but it is also not the complete truth of who he really is.

Abilities/Strengths: He’s a conman, and a very good one. He can trick people out of their money, get them to do his dirty work and generally manipulate situations to his advantage. He’s a good shot and won’t back down in a tight situation. He is also not above a good old-fashioned fistfight. Finally, he’s a packrat and a scavenger, who always seems to have whatever items people need squirreled away in his tent.
Notable Possessions: Sawyer always carries a gun tucked into the back of his jeans, and a pack of cigarettes. He also has a pair of reading glasses that have been created by welding two completely unmatched pairs of eyeglasses together. Before the evacuation of the old compound he stole all the abandoned stuff he could find and has since set up shop in one of the abandoned stores (A4). Anyone looking to trade, barter, or find something can come and try.
Weaknesses: He’s been known to be conned himself, or fail to correctly predict a situation and watched it blow up in his face. He has a lot of emotional issues especially about his past and they tend to eat at him. On top of that all there’s his nasty personality, which tends to drive people away before they can get to know him, or at the very least causes them not to take him very seriously. Finally, he will do anything for Kate.

History:James Ford was born in Jasper, Alabama, but had his life shattered at a young age when his parents were conned out of all their money by a man using the name “Sawyer”. James watched in horror as his father shot both his mother and himself while he hid, and vowed to avenge himself on the man who had ruined his life. He dropped out of high school a few years later and attempted to track him down, but soon ran out of money. Before long he became a con himself, adopting the same profession and even the name of the man who he hated; Sawyer. He used his good looks and charms to seduce rich women who would then convince their husbands to invest in a non-existent business deal and then steal their money. In one case, he attempted this trick on a recently divorced woman named Cassidy who saw through his deception and asked him to teach her the tricks of his trade. Sawyer agreed, and even though he grew to care about her still pulled off a long con in the end and tricked her out of her fortune. Cassidy pressed charges and he was sent to prison. She later visited him and informed him she had since given birth to a baby named Clementine, his daughter. Sawyer helped to trick a fellow prisoner into revealing where he had hidden the money he had stolen, and his sentence was cut short; he had the money he received as a reward deposited into an anonymous bank account for Clementine.

He resumed his old con game, but some time later was informed by a business partner of the whereabouts of the original Sawyer who had killed his parents; Sydney, Australia. He hunted the man down and shot him, only to learn to his horror that the man he had killed had not been the right one, merely someone who owed his partner money. He was involved in a violent bar fight later that night, and subsequently deported from Australia on Oceanic Flight 815, flying to Los Angeles.

The passengers never reached their destination; the plane crashed over the pacific, breaking apart in midair and stranding them on a mysterious island. Although 48 of the passengers survived, they were stranded and no rescue arrived. Sawyer quickly set to work scavenging from the dead, setting up a sort of black market and forcing other survivors to bargain with him for items they needed. He often clashed with Jack, a doctor, over issues of morality and for the attention or Kate, a fellow convict. When Shannon, another survivor suffered an asthma attack, Sawyer refused to hand over any inhalers in his stash to help save her. Jack enlisted the help of Sayid, a former interrogator in the Iraqi National Guard to tortured Sawyer until he reluctantly informed them he did not have the inhalers after all, causing an enraged Sayid to attack him and stab him in the arm. Despite their differences, Jack saved him from bleeding to death and Kate convinced him to try to fit in with the group.

He helped survivors Michael and Jin build their raft in return for a spot on it when they attempted to find help, and seemed to actually be getting along with the other survivors. Things on the island began to get more interesting though when the castaways discovered there was another mysterious and hostile group of people on the island who they referred to as the Others. When the three finally set sail on their raft, along with Michael’s young son Walt, they encountered a small boat which they originally believed to be a rescue but soon discovered was crewed by the Others, who demanded they be allowed to take Walt. Sawyer was shot in the shoulder while trying to save him and jumped off the raft just before it exploded. The three washed ashore and encountered the survivors of the tail section of the plane, who forced them to lead them back to their camp. Sawyer passed out from his wound and was carried the rest of the way back to camp, where he slowly recovered. He then agreed to help Michael locate the Others’ camp, along with Jack and Kate, only to realize it was too late and Michael was leading them into a trap. They were ambushed and kidnapped by the Others, who gave Michael back his son and a boat to escape the island in return for bringing the three new prisoners, who they knocked out and carried off into the jungle.

When he awoke, Sawyer discovered himself in a large cage, and Kate was soon placed in another nearby. Ben, the leader of the Others, tricked him into believing they had installed a pacemaker in his heart that would kill him if it reached a certain heart rate to prevent him from trying to escape. He later learned this had been a lie, but also that they were now on a different island entirely. Kate managed to escape from her cage and join him in his, and they slept together for the first time. After Colleen, one of the Others was killed by the castaways back at camp, her husband Pickett who had been guarding Sawyer and Kate attempted to kill Sawyer but was stopped when Jack threatened to kill Ben unless Sawyer and Kate were allowed to escape. Jack remained behind, but Kate and Sawyer escaped and returned to their camp, where Hurley convinced him to act as the leader of the castaways until Jack returned a few days later, having escaped and bringing Juliet, one of the Others, with him.

Not long afterwards, fellow survivor John Locke lured Sawyer into the jungle the Black Rock, an old 18th century slave ship that had crashed on the island, and locked in a room with a mysterious man who he discovered was the original Sawyer. How he had gotten there was impossible to say, and Sawyer did not know how Locke had known about his connection to the man. He killed him, and Locke released him, informing him that Juliet was a spy; how he knew he did not tell Sawyer, who decided to trust him on the matter. When he confronted her in front of the whole camp she revealed that the Others were planning to attack that night. They set a trap for them but when it failed Sawyer helped to rescue the survivors who had stayed behind fight. When they contacted Jack afterwards he informed them he had just made radio contact with a helicopter that was coming to rescue them. Locke reappeared at just that moment, however, and said that they should not trust the people on the helicopter and the freighter it had come from, and that he planned to avoid them. Sawyer agreed with him, and left Kate behind to follow Locke into the jungle.
